Graeme Rodway's play of the day at York

Faylaq

4.10 York
1pt win

Jim Goldie has done some remarkable things with ageing horses over the last couple of years and Jordan Electrics was one of the stories of the season in 2024. He won four on the spin at the age of eight and the last of his victories came on the 71st start of his long career.

Jordan Electrics went on to record a career-best Racing Post Rating on his 73rd run, so was still improving at such a late stage, and he isn’t the only Goldie runner having a renaissance.

Step forward Faylaq, who won two of his last four starts last season and is now two from four this term. That is another remarkable feat for a horse aged nine, with 49 runs behind him, and he could add to that tally on his 50th start in the 1m2½f handicap (4.10) at York.

Faylaq is simply thriving and followed his two wins at Hamilton this season with an excellent sixth of 14 in a red-hot 1m4f handicap at Haydock two weeks ago. He was beaten only five lengths by the winner Stressfree that day in what was probably a stronger race than this contest.

It is possible to argue that Faylaq is a better horse over further than this trip nowadays because his last three wins have come at 1m4f-plus, but that might be a bit of a red herring. He was successful on his last start over this trip at Ayr last year and has twice won over 1m2f-1m3f.

Faylaq is a strong traveller who should have no problem with a sharper test, and his age will probably put plenty off, which should ensure he is a value price to win once again.
