Graeme Rodway's play of the day at Windsor

Deputy betting editor

Thyer

8.30 Windsor
1pt win

What better way to start Royal Ascot week than with a trip to Windsor the night before it all kicks off, and those sunning themselves by the Thames are advised to back Thyer, who lines up in the mile handicap (8.30) and is taken to record his second course-and-distance victory.

The lightly raced four-year-old has had five runs since that last success and didn’t show much in two outings at Meydan over the winter, but he has looked like a winner in waiting since returning to Britain last month. He has twice run well at Nottingham with cheekpieces fitted.

Thyer was beaten only a neck into second on his first start in the headgear last month and again shaped well when finishing a length and a half behind progressive winner Boyfriend 12 days ago. He travelled well there, but the 1m½f trip may have stretched him.

The return to Windsor’s figure of eight twists and turns should suit Thyer and the mile at this track is nowhere near as stiff as it is at Nottingham. It is also 44 yards shorter in distance. There will be no excuses on the stamina front this time and Rossa Ryan is a positive booking.
