Pietro Innocenzi's must-have banker at Haydock on Saturday
Orchardstown Cross
2.40 Haydock
A scopey eight-year-old who is in his element when switched off in rear before being produced with a late run, he won his first three starts in 2019, all under Rex Dingle, without really knowing he’d had a race.
The wheels dropped off when he bid for a four-timer at Ascot last month, a distant tenth possibly due to a 9lb higher mark in better company. However, it may also have been down to the fact that hold-up runners had little chance given the way the race panned out. Dingle’s absence from the saddle may also have been a contributory factor given how well their partnership had blossomed.
Whatever, Orchardstown Cross’s reappearance win at Exeter was impressive enough for him to be well worth another chance at a track that is likely to suit him better than Ascot. He handled testing ground well on his comeback, while the return of Dingle, who has finished 2111 on him, has to be a boost to his chances.
