Paul Kealy relies on course specialist in staying event for his Placepot perm

We've seen some strange results in two-year-old maidens and Group races this season, none funnier than the juvenile contest that opened the card at Newbury on Saturday and wiped out 99 per cent of the Placepot in one go thanks to a 125-1 winner and 33-1 and 50-1 placed horses.

Such a result is unlikely in the opening leg (1.15) at Newmarket given there are only nine runners, but the few who have run don't set an exacting standard.

It's likely Albert Camus and Toromona will be at the head of the betting after promising debuts and the latter is preferred of the pair as he was very green at Sandown and should have learned plenty. I would also take a chance on the well-bred Royal Champion.

We could see joint favourites in the five-runner contest (1.50) next, but I wouldn't be that confident in Lost In Space seeing out a mile and Last Sunset could prove better treated on his handicap debut.

Betsey Trotter is the right favourite for the fillies' handicap (2.25), but I wouldn't rule out a big run from top weight Stormy Girl, who was a Listed scorer over this trip two starts ago and wasn't at all disgraced when sixth of 15 in a Group 3 last time.

I'm going to take a chance on talking horse La Barrosa not liking the quick ground in the feature (3.00) and instead side with proven quantities Qaader or Yazaman, one of whom should fill second even if the favourite does the business.

Mildenberger is the form horse in leg five (3.35), but if you wanted to trust a horse to run to his best it is surely Withhold, who must concede a penalty but has form figures of 111 at Newmarket and won this race by six lengths last year.

That leaves us with a tight four-runner contest (4.10) in which we have to find the winner. My two against the field would be consistent three-year-old Grand Bazaar and course specialist Hawridge Flyer.
