Paul Kealy provides his Placepot perm at Newmarket

Credit: Edward Whitaker

You're invariably faced with at least one maiden with little form to go on when compiling a Placepot perm on the Flat and evidently it does not put too many people off as Thursday's Newmarket pool attracted slightly more cash than the one at Newcastle despite not a single horse in it having seen the track.

Newmarket starts with a 3yo+ fillies' maiden (1.15) and it's fair to say those who have had a run have not shown that much.

That said, Richard Hannon's was just about the best of them and will probably run her race again. John Gosden's , a sister to two good winners, is the obvious one to include.

The 6f handicap (1.50) is tough, which is why some firms are offering five places each-way (you'll get only three in the pool bet), but has yet to run a bad race at Newmarket so has to be included, while is definitely handicapped to go close despite his market position.

I would look to oppose Brando (2.25) on what seemed very quick ground on Thursday, something which will suit if it stays that way. The progressive Oxtedought to go in as well given there are only two places to play for.

In the mile Listed contest (3.00), I'll take a chance with the unexposed and , who tends to find a way of not winning but is consistent.

has bombed out on his two biggest days but is deadly when fresh and ought to take the beating in the Coronation Cup. It's nearly three years since he ran in Britain but when he did he won both his starts here.

In the closing leg (4.10) Look Closely seemed to relish the step up to 1m4f on fast ground last season and could have a good season ahead of him.
