It is not often you back something in a race, remain reasonably confident that you will collect turning into the home straight, certainly the place part of the bet, but the horse in question ends up beaten 46 lengths into eighth.

That is exactly what happened with A Decent Excuse in the Cork National last month. Having been held up early, he crept into contention on the home turn and looked really dangerous with three to jump. What happened from there is best not talked about.

A Decent Excuse traded at a low of 7.4 in-running there but must not have got home over the marathon 3m4f trip. Back over hurdles off an 11lb lower mark, he simply has to be supported in the 3m handicap hurdle (3.05).
