This two-year-old filly was always playing catch-up on this debut after an untidy start. She was clueless in the first half of the race and didn’t handle the Dip too well, but the penny seemed to be dropping at the business end, with her keeping on to finish a never-nearer fourth. She clearly has plenty of natural ability and is entitled to step up markedly from this next time.

Robert Cowell

On a losing run of 11 and has finished second on each of his last four runs, but he made hotpot Brando pull out all the stops in this 6f Listed race. This was his first start for sprint king Robert Cowell, and since being gelded. The speed this son of Bahamian Bounty maintained a lead of around three lengths for much of this race and was still a couple of lengths up a furlong out, strongly suggesting he will be even more effective back at the minimum distance. He should be on any King’s Stand shortlist and may now return to Newmarket for the Palace House Stakes.

A horse to follow in the big mile handicaps this season. The four-year-old won a Class 3 Nottingham handicap first time out and took another step forward with this staying-on fourth in a typically competitive Spring Cup. The logical target would be the Royal Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot as his come-from-behind style suits a stiff straight course, although he will be in danger of not making the cut unless he impresses the handicapper before the June meeting.
