You often get a lot of chancers in Listed races for fillies and mares with connections looking for some cheap black type, but any earned in the Muhaarar Rosemary Stakes (1.55) at Newmarket will have been well deserved.

I still find it hard to believe that, when a horse's form is available at your fingertips, there are people who still reckon stealing a place in a weakly contested Listed event will enhance their pride and joy's paddock value, but throughout the Flat season you will read and hear comments like "we'll look for a bit of black type".

Back in the old days when computers didn't exist, a bit of black type in a sales catalogue, signifying a win, second or third place at Listed level or above, was a quick way of indicating a certain level of class.
