Newbury's Listed contest was no problem for improving Madeline

Macaque
Second, 7f novice stakes, Sandown, Wednesday, July 19
This tall colt by Rock Of Gibraltar was fitter than he had looked when making his debut at Salisbury three weeks earlier and showed his true colours in second.

He tracked the leaders in third and seemed ideally placed on the inside as the field swung into the home straight, but he was checked for a stride or two when brought out to challenge and that may have cost him victory. He may well make amends next time.

The small Simply Breathless stepped up on her previous run to secure third.

The leggy Guvenor’s Choice was clueless leaving the stalls and found himself detached at halfway, but once encountering the rising ground he picked up in impressive style to take fourth. He will improve mentally for this experience.

The strongly made Great Vizier looked well in his coat but was on the burly side. He made a fair effort in the closing stages and should step forward from this debut effort.

Make Time
Winner, 1m handicap, Sandown, Wednesday
This lightly raced colt looked in tip-top shape despite having been absent for nearly three months since finishing down the field in the Greenham and returned with a bang as he won with the minimum of fuss.

He is ready to return to Pattern level and the Sovereign Stakes at Salisbury next month would be ideal.

The lengthy Selection came here in good form and took another step up the ladder even in defeat.

Captain Courageous looked in excellent order and ran a respectable race. He may have just found the ground softer than ideal.

Mildenberger
Winner, 7f novice stakes (division one), Newbury, Friday, July 21
This big, strong colt by Teofilo walked in coltish and was a bit of a handful, but he settled once down at the start and sprang into life once the stalls opened.

He was always well to the fore and I liked the way he drew clear at the furlong marker. Mark Johnston has indicated that the Vintage Stakes at Goodwood is his next assignment.

Ode To Autumn looked fit for his debut and I thought he shaped encouragingly, but he didn’t have the pace of the winner in the closing stages.

The good-looking Al Jellaby looked to have improved from his first start but was a disappointing third. Perhaps the ground was too quick for him or he may need dropping back to 6f.

The sizeable Dubhe looked on the burly side and showed various degrees of greenness from start to finish, but he did his best work inside the final quarter-mile and this race should have sharpened him up.

I quite liked Bombshell Bay, Carlini, who was very fit, and Wings Of Gold.
