Little relief for punters on a very competitive card
A large investment is no guarantee of landing a very difficult Pick 6 at Naas, which includes four contests for two-year-olds, none of which look easy.
The first two maidens are competitive without an apparent standout performer. The opening colts and geldings maiden (1.35) looks the easier of the two in which Gordon Elliott's Dark Endeavour and the Ballydoyle colt San Andreas are the two against the field.
It is far from easy to even narrow the fillies' maiden (2.05) down to as few as three. It is hoped that the form possessed by Chamrousse, Frosty Beach and I Remember You will be good enough to see one of them home.
And then we have the Birdcatcher Nursery (2.35) in which every runner seems to have some sort of chance. Last week's Navan runner-up Recon Mission certainly goes in, as does Dragons Call, who looks like she has been put away for this since last month. Of the Johnny Murtagh runners, the experience and effectiveness at the trip of Lord Rapscallion makes a good case, while course-and-distance maiden winner Chestnut Express also goes in.
The Foran Equine Auction Final (3.10) features a class act in Gustavus Weston, who has to give weight all round but could well be capable of doing so, and he is joined by the once-raced Dark Pursuit, who should have a bit of improvement in him.
The Listed Garnet Stakes (3.45) looks the most straightforward race of all, and the Dermot Weld-trained Making Light should be very hard to beat. Astonishingly she is the only older filly in the race.
If we haven't been tripped up before then, we may need plenty of luck in the apprentice handicap (4.15), where it is very hard to be confident about any of them. In-form veteran Vastonea gets one vote, the useful-on-his-day Serefeli gets the other.
Good luck, we are sure to need plenty of it.
