Some clear trends have emerged by this relatively mature stage of the season, with this year's crop of three-year-old milers by some way superior to their seniors – as was evident in a one, two, three for the Classic generation in the Sussex Stakes – while the signs are pretty positive for the younger brigade in the middle-distance division too.

There was a one-two for the three-year-olds in the Eclipse, while Epsom Derby fourth Wings Of Desire's second in the King George and Irish Derby third Stellar Mass's defeat of older rivals in a Group 3 at Leopardstown last week augur well considering those two colts were beaten decisively in their Classic encounters.

In the sprinting division though the four-year-old Limato is firmly at the top of the tree after beating a strong field decisively in the July Cup last time, a run that provided further evidence that the other older sprinters are much of a muchness and – as Henry Candy's star proved – vulnerable to being blown away by a genuine top-notcher.
