Jim McGrath with three strong selections for Sha Tin's Sunday card
Kinda Cool
7.00 Sha Tin
2pts win
Galactic
8.35 Sha Tin
2pts win
Party Genius
9.35 Sha Tin
2pts win
Several weeks ago it appeared the spectacularly successful start to Douglas Whyte's training career had lost momentum, but with winners at the last two meetings he is back on course and ready to build on that success at Sha Tin on Sunday.
The South African, who was 13-time Hong Kong champion jockey, is applying all his local knowledge to saddle winners and Galactic, due to run in the Class 4 mile handicap (8.35), appears his best chance on a tricky 11-race card.
Galactic, who is clearly promising, has an interesting profile. An Australian-bred son of Deep Field, his dam is from an Aga Khan family and the pedigree hints strongly that he will be at home over a mile, despite having shown great early speed on his second start.
He has the necessary class to win this and quickly progress up through the ranks, although he can expect Monster Kaka to be a potent threat, especially with the latter having dropped a grade.
Joao Moreira gets the leg-up on Galactic, but Whyte has called on the Brazilian's great rival Zac Purton to partner stablemate Party Genius, who is the one to beat in the Class 4 7f handicap (9.35).
There was much to like about Party Genius's last start second when he finished strongly to fail by a short head in a similar race over course and distance.
Remarkably, the gelding has drawn gate 12 for the third successive time, so Purton, who was also aboard on his last start, will have a good idea of what to expect.
Party Genius, who also appears to have an edge in class over his rivals, is another son of Deep Field, who is making his mark as a stallion. The consistent Golden Four is the principle danger to Party Genius.
The feature is the G3 Queen Mother Memorial Cup (6.30), over a mile and a half, is a rarity in Hong Kong, where the emphasis is more on sprinter-milers. John Moore sends out four of the five runners, but he may still have to give best to Tony Cruz, who saddles Helene Leadingstar.
It took some time for Helene Leadingstar to live up to his good record down under, where he counted a South Australian Derby among his triumphs, but now that he has struck form he will be hard to beat here, especially as there is a lack of pace. He could dominate throughout.
Another to follow on this interesting card is newcomer Kinda Cool, in the Class 4 5f sprint handicap (7.00). The gelding has been well prepared, having won barrier trials in New Zealand and Hong Kong.
Purton has played a big part in giving the Frankie Lor-trained three-year-old the proper grounding and, having drawn nicely on the stands' rail, he can win first time up.
