The Irish, French, Germans and Japanese have all won the race in recent years, so it can only be a matter of time before a British horse wins the Emirates Melbourne Cup (4.00) at Flemington on Tuesday.

To be fair to us Poms, we have been beaten a gnat's whisker on a couple of occasions and a good few of the recent winners had been campaigned here before being sent to race down under.
