Hong Kong tips: Jim McGrath with three selections at Happy Valley

Rise Brethren
2.15 Happy Valley
2pts win

Scotch Tycoon
2.45 Happy Valley
2pts win

Packing Award
3.50 Happy Valley
2pts win

Karis Teetan looks set to maintain his high level of consistency with an impressive book of eight rides headed by promising sprinter
Scotch Tycoon in the Class 3 6f sprint handicap (2.45) at Happy Valley.

Teetan is clear third in the jockeys' championship, 49 winners behind leader Zac Purton, but this is not a true reflection of the impact he has had in a most successful season, the highlight being his Hong Kong Derby triumph aboard Romantic Warrior last month.

The Francis Lui-trained Scotch Tycoon is a rising star in the sprinting ranks, his 3-5 record underlining just how easily he has progressed, and despite a 6lb rise in the handicap, he can go in again, albeit at cramped odds.

All the three-year-old's wins have been registered at the city track, with a course-and-distance success on his most recent start an indication that he gets 6f strongly. Harry Bentley's mount Smart Idea looks the main danger.

Teetan has another excellent chance in Packing Award in the finale, the Class 3 handicap (3.50) over 1m½f, in which he comes up against New Zealand Derby winner Rocket Spade, who drops back in trip after failing in the Hong Kong Derby.

Packing Award is attempting a course-and-distance hat-trick, his last two wins being most impressive and proof that he is going places quickly. He is a son of Cox Plate winner Shamus Award, who is fast making a name for himself as a stallion in Australia.

On his most recent outing, the four-year-old came from the rear to win comfortably, and his 7lb increase in the handicap is hardly enough to impede his progress.

Rocket Spade also won two Guineas in New Zealand, so tackling a mile again is not a worry and he could easily sneak a place.

Rise Brethren did not make it to the Derby, but he managed to win a handicap over 1m2f on the big day, which offered some consolation to connections. The four-year-old now looks set to follow up in the Class 3 handicap (2.15) over 1m3f.

The distance should prove ideal for Rise Brethren, who famously finished second in the Britannia Handicap at Royal Ascot last year when trained by Joseph O'Brien.

Superbella, an ex-Andrew Balding import, also has claims in an interesting staying contest.
