Hong Kong tips: Jim McGrath with three fancies for Wednesday's Happy Valley card

Turin Redstar
1.15 Happy Valley
2pts win

Classic Posh
3.15 Happy Valley
2pts win

Rattan
3.50 Happy Valley
2pts win

Zac Purton, usually most vigorous in the saddle, needed only to apply the light touch to get Classic Posh home when an easy winner at Happy Valley three weeks ago and the combination can follow up in today’s Class 3 6f sprint handicap (3.15).

Easy in the market, Classic Posh overcame an awkwardly wide draw, charging home late along the inside rail to mug trailblazing Colonel a few strides before the line, and over course and distance, there is every reason to expect a repeat.

This is despite a rise in the handicap, with Colonel again looking his main danger. A 7lb increase is not going to be enough to reverse the order, particularly as Classic Posh has drawn significantly better (gate 7) and should be able to slot in mid-division.

Colonel is a speedy type, who is expected to run well again, while the well-drawn Jolly Good Heart should be in the firing line most of the way and can be included in multiples.

Purton is going great guns early in the championship – he leads Joao Moreira 16-10 and so, too, is Harry Bentley, who has two wins on the board and continues to steadily gain the confidence of owners and trainers.

Hong Kong icon Douglas Whyte is a Bentley fan and has booked him again for Turin Redstar, who is set to notch back-to-back wins when contesting the Class 3 handicap (1.15), over 1m1f.

Bentley made the most of an inside draw over the extended mile on the gelding last time, travelling in the box seat throughout before winning well, and the increase in distance this time should prove no hindrance. Drawn gate 1, he can again get the run of the race, with Superbella his main threat.

The Richard Gibson-trained Rattan has not won since April 2019 but a drop in grade gives the eight-year-old his chance to rectify that in the finale, the Class 2 handicap (3.50), over the extended mile, despite being drawn a little wide.

Remarkably, this is the first time Rattan (7-39) has run at Happy Valley, but there is no reason he will not handle it. He and his main danger Not Usual Talent can come with a late rattle in a race in which there should be a decent pace.
