Hong Kong Champions Day is set to live up to its billing, but the card is as much for budding stars as it is for champions, as there are at least three set to run on the undercard.
Heading that list is the John Size-trained Courier Wonder, who is unbeaten after three starts and has excellent prospects of completing a four-timer in the FWD Insurance My Legend Handicap (10.50) despite it being his biggest test to date.
The three-year-old received an 8lb hike from the handicapper for his most recent victory, an increase that pushes him into the bottom of Class 2 company. But such is the promise he has displayed, it is unlikely to halt his progress.
Joao Moreira has been unstinting in his praise of the son of Sacred Falls and from a middle draw in gate eight, he has every chance of getting some cover before being unleashed for a final surge in the home straight.
Zac Purton will have a plan to overcome Lucky Patch’s wide draw in stall 12, which could be pushing forward, while the much-hyped Winning Dreamer is fitted with a tongue-tie for the first time and is a big danger.
Size and Moreira also combine with two other unbeaten potential stars, the first being Fantastic Way in the FWD Insurance ICBC (Asia) Handicap (6.45), who might be better value than he should be on paper.
The other is Gallant Express, who Moreira is confident will appreciate the step up in trip in the FWD Insurance CCB (Asia) Handicap (8.25), in which former Classic contender Star Performance looks a chief threat.
Top Japanese sprinter Danon Smash is one of two 'bankers' awaiting punters in the three Championship races as he bids for Group 1 Chairman’s Sprint Prize (7.50) glory. Of course, the other is Golden Sixty, who should hack up in the FWD Champions Mile (8.55).
Finally, Tourbillon Diamond is an attractive mount for Zac Purton in the FWD Insurance Act Champion Handicap (10.15), which is an ideal target for this one-time ATC Derby third in Sydney. He is tipped to beat a particularly strong field, with Savaquin rating the next best.
Bets can be placed into Hong Kong pools with the Tote, Coral and Ladbrokes. The first race at Sha Tin on Sunday is at 5.45am
