Hong Kong racing tips: Jim McGrath with three Happy Valley bets on Wednesday
Winning Icey
1.45 Happy Valley
2pts win
Hercules
2.15 Happy Valley
2pts win
California Redwood
2.45 Happy Valley
2pts win
Karis Teetan is still on a high following his great triumph in Sunday's QEII Cup and he looks set to follow up with Hercules in the second division of the Class 4 6f handicap (2.15) at Happy Valley on Wednesday.
Racing at a lower level only days after the heady excitement of Group 1 success might be hard for some to fathom but not in Hong Kong, where every race is of importance, particularly to punters.
Teetan was brilliant on Derby winner Romantic Warrior, who joined an elite group to have taken the coveted Classic and the QEII in the same season, and while Hercules can hardly be mentioned in the same breath, he once finished fourth in a Group 2 race in Australia, where he shaped as a middle-distance type.
Both his wins in Hong Kong have come over course and distance and now he is back on a handy mark, he is going to take a power of beating.
His last run was a cracker when he finished an eyecatching second to Super Mission in a similar race, coming from near last after settling down.
Paul O'Sullivan is firing in a few winners of late and Gang Of Brothers, a four-start maiden, is showing plenty of promise and looks dangerous from an inside draw (stall four), with Zac Purton in the saddle.
Purton's long-time rival Joao Moreira has his usual collection of good rides on this nine-race card, arguably the most interesting being the Tony Cruz-trained California Redwood in the Class 3 6f handicap (2.45).
California Redwood was 2-4 when trained by Roger Varian, who also saddled him to finish 16th behind Perotto in last year's Britannia at Royal Ascot.
Both his runs locally have been good, and this four-year-old son of Holy Roman Emperor is well-regarded and should now be ready to register his first Hong Kong win.
Caspar Fownes reached a notable milestone in his career when notching his 1,000th winner as a trainer last weekend, and he has the firepower to keep making his presence felt.
Winning Icey can keep the strike-rate respectable by opening his account in the first division of the Class 4 6f handicap (1.45).
This three-year-old caught the eye when third on his debut over 5f and should relish the extra furlong today. He can go in at the second time of asking, with Perfect Peach his biggest danger.
