Hong Kong racing tips: Jim McGrath with three fancies on Thursday's Sha Tin card

Sky Field
8.00 Sha Tin (Thu)
2pts win

Sumstreetsumwhere
9.35 Sha Tin
2pts win

Mighty Giant
10.45 Sha Tin
2pts win

Two future stars are set to occupy the limelight on a special ten-race holiday card for Chinese National Day at Sha Tin on Thursday and, not surprisingly, Hong Kong’s two big name jockeys will ride them.

Joao Moreira, setting a cracking pace in the jockeys’ championship, is aboard the talented Sky Field in the Class 3 6f sprint handicap (8.00) as the son of speed sire Deep Field attempts to establish his credentials for a crack at the Classic Mile in January.

Caspar Fownes considers the four-year-old one of the most exciting talents he has trained, which is understandable considering the manner of his two course-and-distance wins.

Sky Field has gone up nine points in the ratings for his easy victory on his last start two weeks ago, but that is unlikely to stop his rapid rise through the grades. He faces seven rivals, of which Take What You Need could pose the biggest threat.

Zac Purton will take the ride on the day’s other potential star, the Ricky Yiu-trained Mighty Giant, who faces his biggest test in the Class 2 7f handicap (10.45).

Following a spectacularly successful first season — he won four and was second twice in seven starts — the five-year-old tackles Class 2 company for the first time and must also contend with a wide draw (13), from which even the best can be undone.

Interestingly, Yiu sent Mighty Giant to Conghua, the HKJC training facility in China, because he wanted the son of Power to have a complete break. Following a layoff of five-and-a-half months, the gelding is back refreshed, with his trainer predicting he could be contesting Group races later on this season.

Beauty Legacy, a well-regarded horse in Australia, has shown a preference for 7f from limited opportunities so far in Hong Kong, with trainer John Size still working him out.

Jerry Chau, who has made a positive impression since taking out a licence locally, is great value for his 10lb claim and trainer David Hall is the latest to call on the apprentice’s skills, booking him for consistent Sumstreetsumwhere in the Class 4 (9.35). It should prove a winning move.
