Pierre-Charles Boudot is tipped to conclude a glorious year in the saddle by winning Hong Kong's International Jockeys' Championship at Happy Valley where he has a solid collection of mounts in an open tournament.
A new format for allocation of rides has evened it up to some extent, but there are still certain to be grumbles among the invitees, who have drawn longshots. They should not worry, though, as outsiders have a habit of featuring on these occasions.
If any were doubting Boudot's great talent, they were silenced at Keeneland last month with two of the best rides ever seen at the Breeders' Cup when he landed the Mile on Order Of Australia and the Filly & Mare Turf aboard Audarya.
Boudot may be required to replicate his Order Of Australia performance to take the first leg of Wednesday's championship on Jazz Steed from stall ten, but there will be plenty of speed up front and the son of Exceed And Excel can finish strongly to win this Class 4 5f handicap (12.10).
Boudot is just the rider required for the David Hall-trained Maldives in the second leg, the Class 4 handicap (12.40), over 1m½f, as the four-year-old has shown he is well up to this grade on his present mark but needs galvanising to break through.
Maldives, who should be better over longer distances, has most to fear from the capable Regency Master, William Buick's mount, while Ryan Moore, early favourite to win the championship, also has a solid chance aboard Play Wise.
Moore, incidentally, has picked up other attractive rides on the undercard, most notably Here Comes Ted for David Ferraris in the Class 4 6f handicap (1.10) in which he can overcome a wide draw to win.
This is Joao Moreira's home patch and he will be out to show the visitors his prowess, which may be best showcased aboard the Douglas Whyte-trained Smiling City in the third leg, a Class 3 handicap (1.40), over 1m½f. Boudot's Reel Bizzy is the danger.
For the grand finale, Tom Marquand is taken to win the Class 3 6f handicap (2.10) on the big-priced Wind N Grass, a late-finisher tipped to come with a rattle to get the better the Hollie Doyle-ridden favourite Harmony N Blessed.
Bets can be placed into Hong Kong pools with the Tote, Coral and Ladbrokes. The first race at Happy Valley on Wednesday is at 10.30am
