If Trials day on Saturday was an omen of things to come it does not look too good for the British at Cheltenham next month – particularly with the hurdlers.

Those who are hoping the 23-5 pasting the Irish handed out 12 months ago was a mere blip are probably rightly worried now, and it wouldn’t be a great surprise if one of the forward-thinking bookies started offering prices about where the first British-trained horse will finish in some of the races.
