Hero can make amends after unlucky comeback

Discreet Hero was an unlucky loser when beaten two-and-a-quarter lengths off this mark on his seasonal return at Bath but Simon Crisford’s charge is strongly fancied to make amends by swooping late under Andrea Atzeni.

The four-year-old travelled strongly but was hampered when making smooth progress up the rail and would have been much closer to winner Union Rose with a clear passage.

However, once in the open Discreet Hero picked up generously, suggesting he can be more than competitive off his mark of 82, and a strongly run 5f should suit.

Trailblazers Lydia’s Place and Arzaak could set the race up for a closer and any drying ground will aid his chances.

Normandie Attack each-way
9.05 Kempton

Normandie Attack has hinted he could be one to follow when stepped into handicap company and his opening mark off 77 makes him of interest.

Charlie Fellowes’ three-year-old has finished second in his last two starts in maidens but those races didn’t play to his strengths and the stiffer test of stamina looks sure to bring out the best in him.

He has bumped into a couple of useful rivals and, without being disgraced, has always shaped like a horse who would improve with age and racing.

He chased home the 85-rated Nadaitak at Carlisle before staying on stoutly at Lingfield behind Thistimenextyear, who has an opening mark of 80.

There’s plenty of stamina in Normandie Attack’s breeding and he should improve for the step up two miles.

Tobrave
8.05 Kempton

Tobrave returns to the track for his handicap debut after a 268-day layoff, but a gelding operation may have ironed out his kinks.

Roger Varian has kept faith with the three-year-old and, being by Invincible Spirit, he’s bred to be much better than his opening mark of 75.

Tobrave’s best effort came at this track on debut when shaping with promise behind Permian, with the 88-rated Aventinus splitting the pair, and his return here makes him a fascinating contender.

He disappointed at Chepstow next time and then pulled too hard on his final start as a two-year-old when fourth at Lingfield.

Varian reaches for the headgear here, the yard are among the winners and Tobrave also gets the benefit of David Egan’s 5lb claim. It would be disappointing if he can’t go close.

Cosmeapolitan each-way
3.30 Bath

Cosmeapolitan started his four-year-old campaign in one of the hottest handicaps of the season and he could be hard to stop with his sights lowered.

He was beaten nineand-three-quarter lengths by Frontiersman in a handicap at the Guineas meeting, a race that has thrown up four subsequent winners since, and the combination of a drop in trip and ease in grade could work the oracle.

Cosmeapolitan was just touched off by Rock Steady off 2lb higher in November and has generally been campaigned against much stronger opposition than this.

Last time out he contested the Old Newton Cup at Haydock and although readily outclassed, he’s slipping down the weights and August may be the time to catch him.

He hosed up off 10lb lower this time last year and, having had just 15 career starts, is still open to plenty of improvement.
