Newbury Placepot picks: Tom Segal has three bankers on competitive card

The first five races on the Newbury card are all about potential rather than form and it will take some educated guesswork to get through the Placepot.

To start with there is the two-year-old maiden (1.40) and it could be worth siding with the two most expensive horses in the line up Redemption Time for Clive Cox and Backing Ballymore for Richard Hannon.

Simon and Ed Crisford saddled the winner the Coln Valley Stud Bridget Maiden Fillies' Stakes last year and their runner Fine Balance should be included in the first division (2.11), along with the John and Thady Gosden-trained The Notorious Rbg, who is closely related to two high-class horses for the yard.

The two fillies that makes most appeal on paper in the second division (2.46) are Whitebeam for the in-form Charlton team and the William Haggas-trained Razeyna.

Charlie Appleby only has two fillies entered in the Oaks, so it could be worth banking on the one making her debut in the Highclere Thoroughbred Racing Maiden Fillies' Stakes (3.21). Life Of Dreams is bred to be a top-class runner as her dam won two Group races and was second in the Group 1 Prix Vermeille.

It could be a good day for Appleby and Godolphin because Hafit is clearly the form horse in the Dubai Duty Free Golf World Cup British EBF Conditions Stakes (3.56). The yard won this race last year with Hurricane Lane, who went on to win the Irish Derby and the St Leger.

In the final leg, the Compton Beauchamp Estates Ltd Silver Bar Handicap (4.31), it's probably safe to bank on the Nicky Henderson-trained Ahorsewithnoname. She put up a much improved effort when second in the Mares' Novices' Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival and is thrown in if she can repeat that level of form back on the Flat.
