Haydock the logical option for July Cup winner Harry Angel
Sprint Cup could be his for the taking
Raheen House
Winner, Bahrain Trophy, 1m5f, Newmarket, Thursday, July 13
The last horse to win this Group 3 and go on to win the St Leger was Masked Marvel in 2011 and this good-looking son of Sea The Stars has a fair chance of emulating him. He looked bursting with health and settled in midfield before coming through with a strong challenge a furlong out. He is clearly improving and the longer trip brought out the best in him. He goes straight to Doncaster.
The medium-sized Desert Skyline looked fit but was a little headstrong at the start. Even so, he stayed on in determined style and showed this trip is what he needs.
Fourth-placed Tamleek looked well, but he needs time to strengthen up because he is still unfurnished.
Rajasinghe
Third, July Stakes, 6f, Newmarket, Thursday
A highly competitive field of juveniles assembled for this Group 2 and the Coventry winner had done remarkably well in 23 days. He is big and strong and looked on good terms with himself. Placed in midfield, he made headway but lacked an instant change of pace and it was not until well inside the closing stages that he closed in on the front two. He would have no problem with an extra furlong.
Cardsharp was a handful before James Doyle finally got on his back, but he came with a sustained challenge well inside the final furlong. This was his first start at 6f and the victory opens up a few more avenues.
The neatly made US Navy Flag looked in good order and ran with credit.
The good-bodied Invincible Army was the nicest colt in the race, but he was fired off in front and may have done too much because he paid for it in the closing stages.
Denaar, Enjazaat and the sizeable Hey Gaman all looked well.
Hawkbill
Winner, Princess of Wales’s Stakes, 1m4f, Newmarket, Thursday
Last year’s Eclipse winner was hot in the preliminaries, but that is just his way and he showed greater resolution in the finish than the runner-up. He has now won twice over 1m4f and the longer trip has opened up more avenues for him.
Frontiersman had last been seen hanging on the camber in the Coronation Cup and looked to have a solid chance, but as soon as he was given a backhander he veered to his left and then back to his right. He clearly isn’t straightforward.
Algometer looked fine beforehand and ran respectably in third, but he clearly needs further.
Wings Of Desire disappointed. He may have found the race coming a bit too soon after running in the Hardwicke 19 days earlier.
