Newcastle Placepot picks: Graeme Rodway with his perm on the all-weather

There aren’t many runners at Newcastle, but the Placepot dividend could pay well if there are some upsets.

The opening 2m½f handicap (1.30) is one of the more competitive races and Ravenscar, who was a winner over hurdles at the track last time, is my main pick. Vis A Vis is next best.

There are some promising older horses in the 1m2f novice stakes (2.00) and preference is for Greek Flame, who won well at Wolverhampton in December and that form sets the standard.

Only three line up in the 6f conditions race (2.35) and we will need to find the winner. It’s not worth taking chances in a trappy event, so put El Caballo, Canonized and Hellomydarlin in.

Spoof is one of my best bets of the day and must be included in the 5f handicap (3.10), but only two places are on offer. Look Out Louis has been in good form and should also go in.

Dutch Decoy was unlucky not to win at Chelmsford last time and is consistent enough to be my main selection in the 7f handicap (3.45). Likely favourite Internationalangel is a back-up.

Anthem National made a promising debut when third here this month and rates a banker in the 7f novice stakes (4.20). Simon and Ed Crisford’s runners often improve plenty for a run.
