Gordon trumps Doyle to land big Newbury prize

It’s not often you see two female jockeys fighting out the finish of a valuable handicap, but Josephine Gordon and Hollie Doyle are both pretty special and they had Newbury’s Dubai Duty Free Handicap to themselves.

Doyle certainly did nothing wrong on Scarlet Dragon, who travelled strongly and looked a certain winner entering the final furlong, trading at 1.16 in running.

However, Gordon, who had a much tougher passage on Baydar, somehow managed to find a way through and got up in the last 50 yards to win going away. Hugo Palmer’s three-year-old defied an in-running high of 470.
