Tom Segal's play of the day at Southwell

Tipster

Imperial Guard

4.37 Southwell

Imperial Guard has been disappointing since joining Michael Dods because he looked likely to become one of the best three-year-old sprinters of his generation last season.

He finished in front of the now 103-rated and Stewards' Cup winner Two Tribes when third in the valuable three-year-old handicap at the July meeting. He's not been anywhere near that level this season, but he did run well off a 10lb higher mark over course and distance in May and there was a clear indication he was coming back to form at Chelmsford in first-time blinkers last time.

It didn't look as if he really liked going round the bend that day and got going only when the race was all over, but he was closing down fast at the line and he's likely to travel much better at this track.
