Robbie Wilders' play of the day at Newmarket

Vantheman

1.50 Newmarket

The Flat is starting to take precedence for most punters, and all eyes will be on Newmarket for the first day of the Craven meeting.

We kick off with a big-field 6f handicap (1.50) and this looks the best betting race on the card. Elmonjed ran to a Racing Post Rating of 105 on his final start at three and could have a few pounds in hand on his return off a BHA mark of 96.

However, the early market hasn't missed him and another lightly raced four-year-old appeals more on the first show in Vantheman

Kevin Ryan's runners at this meeting are always worth respecting, particularly his sprinters. He saddled the 33-1 winner of the Abernant Stakes in 2024 and Vantheman, a progressive sprinter himself at three who is Ryan's sole runner on the card, looks the type to improve this term.

The son of Invincible Army won on his comeback last season, so can go well fresh, and while this is his first run over 6f since his juvenile days, his two 5f victories last season came on stiff tracks in Newcastle and Pontefract. He won over this trip as a juvenile and has untapped potential at the distance.
