Richard Birch's play of the day at Beverley

Sanat

4.40 Beverley

Sanat began his career over a mile, but it now looks highly likely he will flourish at sprint distances.

The four-year-old, who is a half-brother to Almaty Star, a five-furlong specialist with an official rating of 86, looked every inch a sprinter when landing a 5f handicap at Southwell last time.

He produced a good turn of foot to settle that 0-85 in a first-time tongue-tie and beat stablemate Counsel by a length and a half.

The third Rhythm N Hooves has won at Southwell since, while the fourth Jumbeau performed really well to finish third to the now 99-rated Spartan Arrow in a handicap at Epsom last month.

Sanat, raised 6lb to a mark of 79 following that Southwell success, fits snugly into Beverley’s feature 5f handicap (4.40).

This is a race for horses rated 59-78, but is also open to runners with marks of 79 and 80, so it’s fair to say Sanat may hold a considerable class advantage over his 13 rivals, five of whom are rated 67 or below.

It’s also pertinent to assume that Sanat, who will be having just the ninth run of his career, is open to more improvement than most of his opponents and could prove several pounds better than his current mark in due course.

In addition to looking the perfect fit for the race, Sanat is well drawn in stall six. He should take plenty of beating.
