Four two-year-olds it could pay to follow

Bow Belles was a big-priced winner when delivering at Ripon last weekend, the filly returning at 14-1 on her second start. May Remain has proved very consistent, and won for the second time at Nottingham on Tuesday.

The string of seconds continued, with Star Of Zaam hitting the bar again at Carlisle, while Ferik ran another good race in defeat at Leicester. Rebel Streak also found one too good at Ascot, while Life For Rent was third at Pontefract.

Quargent, 8th, Newmarket, July 15
There was money around for this filly on debut, and she did show enough to think she can make an impact when next seen.

She was a bit green in behind, and then had to switch out to the centre to try and challenge before weakening. But she was not not given an unduly hard time, and should have learnt plenty from her debut.

Awesometank, 4th, Windsor, July 17
On pedigree an extra furlong should suit this filly, and she was doing her best work late on here.

Held up, she started to stay on in the final furlong to take fourth, and when presented with an extra furlong can go a lot closer.

Shaherezada, 5th, Doncaster, July 20
The sixth from this race, Rayna's World, will have gone in a few notebooks, and so should this filly.

Clive Cox is having a great season with his juveniles, and Shaherezada was green towards the rear of the field before making progress in the final furlong. She should be capable of better on her next couple of starts.

Elation, 5th, Newbury, July 21
Hampered as soon as the stalls opened, this filly was immediately on the backfoot and was towards the rear for much of the race.

In the final furlong and a half she started to make some nice progress, staying on into fifth. She should be able to get a lot closer when back in action.

Trainer to note

Roger Varian has not raced many two-year-olds for the first half of the season, but those that he has sent to the track have done well.

From 22 runners he has had six winners (27 per cent strike-rate). Madeline was fifth in the Albany then claimed a Listed race at Newbury, while he has had three winners from three runners at Yarmouth so far this season.

Sire to note

A first-season sire for two-year-olds, Red Jazz has hit the ground running with nine winners from 36 runners (25 per cent).

All bar one of those have come on turf, and his progeny seem tough, with three of the winners able to follow up. Among those is the unbeaten Mutanaaseq, who defeated subsequent Super Sprint winner Bengali Boys on his second start.
