Four two-year-olds it could pay to follow

Round-up

Plenty of runners from the first two weeks have been back out, and the column is up and running for the season as Might Remain won at Goodwood last Friday.

Spoof was placed again when third at Beverley, though was a touch disappointing, while Magic Applause bumped into one at Catterick.

Iconic Sunset, Newmarket, May 18, 5th

For much of the race this colt was out the back and was being urged along at halfway. Still towards the rear coming into the dip, Iconic Sunset started to pick up nicely and by the end was fifth.

He should improve plenty for the experience, and will probably benefit for going over further.

Life For Rent, Carlisle, May 22, 4th

Tim Easterby is yet to get off the mark with his juveniles, but this colt might be able to help when next seen.

Slowly away, he was green out the back, but then started to get the hang of things as the leaders started to tire. He did not enjoy a straightforward passage to the line, having to switch a couple of times. With normal improvement he should be able to find something on his next few outings.

Special Mission, Kempton, May 24, 7th

Sir Mark Prescott's first juvenile runner of the season shaped with a great deal of promise. In the rear, she was green and was actually last with two furlongs left to run.

However she really started to get the hang of things in the final furlong, and stayed on strongly for Luke Morris, who was urging her along with hands and heels. That was a nice introduction, and if building on that, she could be a different proposition on her next couple of starts.

Ferik, Haydock, May 26, 6th

You could probably take any number of horses out of this race as eyecatchers as it looked like a good novice to follow with several potentially useful types running.

Among those is Ferik, who was noted making some decent late headway to out-run his 50-1 starting price. A half-brother to Wigmore Hall, he is likely to need further so might be one for later in the season but this was still an encouraging start.

Trainers to note

Spoof may not have done the business for this column yet, but trainer Charlie Hills has made a strong start to the season with his juveniles. With five winners from 20 runners (25 per cent), he looks to have a decent team, with Newbury winner Nebo shaping like a Royal Ascot type.

Havana Grey is another who is heading to the royal meeting off the back of a dominant win in Sandown's National Stakes, and Karl Burke's two-year-olds are going well. He has had four winners from 25 runners (16 per cent) but throw in three seconds and five thirds and it means nearly half have hit the frame.

Sire to note

Prince Of The Dark made headlines for where he ended up post-debut at Bath, but it was still an impressive victory, and capped a good week for sire Lethal Force who has had a few winners.

Clive Cox trained Lethal Force, and also trains Prince Of The Dark, so it could be worth paying attention to more progeny making their debut for the yard.
