Four two-year-olds it could be worth following

Update for weeks one and two

The column has its first winners for the season, as Deep Intrigue gained a win at Beverley, and then Cosmic Law improved sufficiently from his Doncaster debut to oblige at Carlisle.

Arcadian Rocks was another in action, and after finishing a slightly unlucky fourth at Chester, he was then below-par at Doncaster, perhaps that run came too soon. Wolf Hunter was a fair third at Ripon, and has been gelded since.

A slow start put this filly on the back foot and she then showed promise without being given too hard a time.

Trainer Julie Camacho is not noted for two-year-olds, but this filly was only beaten two lengths, and jockey Paul Mulrennan gave her a nice education. If sharper on her next couple of starts, she could find a novice at the right level.

Showu
Ascot, May 11, 6th

The form from this maiden is already working out, with the second and third going in next time.

Showu was a couple of places further back, but she showed plenty of promise. Travelling nicely behind a wall of horses, she was green when asked to go through a gap, but stuck to her task well and was not beaten far. She could be in action this weekend, with entries at Goodwood and York.

Mutawaffer
Ascot, May 12, 4th

After leaving the stalls awkwardly, this colt was settled off the pace and then really got the hang of things towards the end of the race.

Andrea Atzeni only had to use hands and heels to get Mutawaffer to make nice gains in the final furlong, and he shaped as if a sixth furlong should suit. Like Showu's maiden, this race should provide winners, and Mutawaffer will have a chance to prove that at Goodwood on Thursday.

Prince Of Rome
Windsor, May 14, 5th

This colt made his debut in a race which should work out, and he showed some nice speed.

An extra furlong should help on pedigree, and he was perhaps a little keen early, but he kept on well against the rail to be beaten just over two lengths. On his next few starts he should find an opening.

Trainer to note

Prince Of Rome is trained by Richard Hughes, and while the yard is yet to have a juvenile winner this season, lots of the runners have shaped promisingly.

The yard are 0-16 so far, but eight of those runners have been placed. At some point that luck should change, and Hughes could have a run of juvenile winners.

Sire to note

On the track, Charm Spirit excelled at seven furlongs and a mile, but his progeny have had enough speed to make an immediate impact for the first-season sire.

Three of his progeny have already found the winner's enclosure, and with the six furlong maidens and novices now starting, he could enjoy further success.
