Expect in-form Charlton's Yellowhammer to soar at Kempton
Threat Assessed
3.35 Nottingham
Stoney Broke
4.05 Nottingham
African Friend
4.40 Nottingham
Yellowhammer
8.15 Kempton
Threat Assessed
3.35 Nottingham
The unexposed Threat Assessed is worth a small wager in this highly competitive handicap.
Clive Cox’s four-year-old gelding looked progressive in a light campaign last year, winning gamely over 1m1f at Sandown before finding only Wall Of Fire too good at Haydock.
He was a shade unlucky in that race as he had a protracted duel up the home straight and was just getting on top when Wall Of Fire appeared late on the scene.
Threat Assessed made his belated comeback in the Dubai Duty Free Handicap at Newbury last month and was far too keen in the early stages. He did make a short-lived move inside the home straight but wasn’t knocked around once his chance had gone.
He is going to strip much fitter for that and comes here fresher than most. The ground will be fine for him and his trainer has been doing very well here this season with six winners from 18 runners.
Stoney Broke
4.05 Nottingham
James Fanshawe’s consistent filly Stoney Broke should appreciate this step up in trip and is fancied to go close.
A winner at this track on her only start at two, she clearly had issues after that as she raced only once last season.
This season has been much smoother, however, and she looks to be hitting top form as she put up a career-best on turf in a hot 1m4f handicap at Doncaster last time out.
The daughter of Dansili travelled well until the tempo increased two furlongs out and she briefly hit a flat spot. At that stage it looked as if she would fade, but she soon picked up again and stayed on strongly into third.
That form has a solid feel to it and a return to slightly quicker ground is a positive.
African Friend
4.40 Nottingham
Henry Candy’s sprinter African Friend has shown plenty of ability in his brief career and could be ready to take a big step forward here.
He has the size and scope to excel at this trip but has often been the cause of his own downfall by pulling too hard or exiting the stalls slowly.
He is getting better, though, and bumped into a well-handicapped rival when second at Sandown last time out.
After badly missing the break, he showed smart acceleration to cut through the pack and briefly led but was outbattled late on, with the first two clear.
African Friend should be suited by this race as there doesn’t seem to be a great deal of pace, so if he is slowly away it shouldn’t compromise his chances too much.
He’s also up against a field of exposed sprinters who have either been on the go all season or are out of form.
Yellowhammer
8.15 Kempton
In-form Roger Charlton looks to have found the perfect opportunity for his lightly raced three-year-old filly Yellowhammer to follow up her handicap debut win at Newmarket in July.
Not a man to rush his charges, Charlton has given Yellowhammer plenty of time to get over her last win, which may have taken plenty out of her as she was quite keen early and had to overcome a troubled passage to get up on the line.
Yellowhammer clearly has bags of potential and comes from a good family.
The Polytrack surface shouldn’t be an issue and she has a decent draw in stall three.
