Exeter Placepot picks: Richard Birch with his advice for the track's big day

Paul Nicholls can kick off what could prove a highly successful afternoon with Outlaw Peter, who is fancied to bag the 2m5½f novice hurdle (12.55), the opening leg of the Exeter Placepot.

The son of Mustameet boasts proven race fitness, having scored at Worcester last month, and can prove too strong for Ask Me Early.

Huflower looks another possible scorer for the Ditcheat trainer in the 2m½f novice hurdle. The French recruit is preferred to Brief Times.

Hitman holds strong claims in the feature Haldon Gold Cup (1.55), with Moonlighter, who was narrowly beaten in the race 12 months ago, looking second best once again.

The Nicholls-trained Threeunderthrufive, winner of four of his five races over hurdles, shaped well over fences when runner-up to Does He Know at Chepstow last month. He should take plenty of beating in the four-runner 3m novice chase (2.25).

Fitness won't be an issue with De Name Evades Me or Poppa Poutine in the 3m handicap chase (2.55). Both hail from in-form stables who often get their horses ready first time out.

Martha Brae makes strong appeal on her first start for Dan Skelton in the 2m5½f mares' handicap hurdle (3.25).
