I have been critical of the York ground in recent years because there have been so many funny results, but this week the track was riding as well as it ever has done and full marks have to go to William Derby and all the team on the Knavesmire.

All the right horses won all the right races, starting with Postponed beating Highland Reel in the Juddmonte. That was followed hot on the heels by an imperious performance by Idaho in the Voltigeur and anyone trying to get him beat in the Leger is facing a fruitless task because he looks miles ahead of everything else on form. Furthermore he promises to be even better over a mile and three-quarters.

On the second day, perhaps the biggest potential threat to Idaho at Doncaster, Seventh Heaven, hacked up in the Yorkhsire Oaks and she is going to get better and better.
