There's never a harder time to back a winner on the Flat in Britain than in October.

A ten-year average SP of 7.25-1 for winners in this month is higher than any other month and 20 per cent greater than the height of summer.

The reasons for this are fairly obvious. The ground is usually on the soft side (though that hasn't been such a problem so far this year), while previously in-form horses can lose their form after a long season and out-of-form horses can suddenly bounce back having become well handicapped.
