Donnacha O'Brien's choice provides clue to Listed contest

Credit: Alan Crowhurst

There is a complicating factor in the opening race (2.05), on account of the presence of newcomers representing trainers such as Willie McCreery, Michael O'Callaghan and Paddy Twomey, all well capable of having a juvenile ready first time.

However, previous experience is an asset, and could turn this into a duel between Joseph O'Brien's Navan third Lady Penelope and On Tick, a twice-raced colt from Katy Brown's small County Kildare yard.

In the nursery (2.35), the strength of Jessica Harrington's two-year-old team helps to make the case for Invincible Diva who also has the merit of having won on yielding ground. The good form of Johnny Murtagh's team points to Captain Corcoran as a likely danger.

The consistent Sun Sign, who went close in a Curragh maiden on Friday evening, and the dropped-in-class Hathiq are put forward as two against the field in the sprint handicap (3.10).

Donnacha O'Brien's preference for his brother's recent Naas winner Vitalogy over his father's more experienced Harpocrates may provide the key to the Listed race (3.40), although it would be foolish to rule out the Ger Lyons-trained Leopardstown winner Justifier.

Hey Pretty looks interesting for the in-form John McConnell yard in an open handicap (4.15). The locally-trained Crafty Hugo is a more speculative suggestion. Finally, Dermot Weld's 82-rated filly Kiss For A Jewel is suggested as a banker in the fillies' maiden (4.45).
