The Clonmel Oil Chase has the look of a trappy affair and the best play could be a tactical one on rank outsider Alpha Des Obeaux.

There is unlikely to be much competition for the lead, so Alpha Des Obeaux could get loose on the front. Much the same transpired in the recent Champion Chase at Down Royal. While he finished last there, he was only beaten 13 lengths in a much deeper race than this.

On form, Alpha Des Obeaux is entitled to be involved here. His best effort in recent times, when third in last year's Becher Chase under top weight, puts him right among the best of these. Obviously most of his form is over further than 2m4f and he may not replicate his very best, but heavy ground will suit both his running style and surplus stamina.

With tactics on his side, Alpha Des Obeaux may get close enough to get in among the places and reward his buyers with a return. He is a cheap enough buy to make taking the chance worthwhile in a fiddly race.
