Boom gets Ebor meeting off with a bang

It didn’t take long for the fireworks to start at York’s Ebor meeting. In the opening 5f handicap, Duke Of Firenze appeared to have been delivered with a well-timed run to reward favourite backers and nearly £11,500 was traded on him at 1.01 on Betfair, but Boom The Groom proved a tenacious rival, rallying to get back up on the line after being done at 500.

It was a similar story in the following Group 3 Acomb Stakes.
Hot favourite Best Of Days was backed down to 1.05 after being kicked on approaching the final furlong. Unfortunately for his backers it didn’t prove a race-winning move and he was worn down in the final strides by Syphax (310), who came from well off the pace.

Housesofparliament was backed down to 1.3 when it brielfy looked like he might have nicked the Great Voltigeur under a canny front-running ride from Jamie Spencer, who wound it up gradually, but favourite Idaho devoured the ground in the final two furlongs to win going away in the manner of a thorough stayer having briefly looked in trouble.
