Berry looks a juicy betting opportunity at Aintree

Finian's Oscar finished a head second to the Gary Moore-trained Benatar despite some jumping errors

The strong-galloping mare is now 0-4 at Cheltenham, but not for the first time at this course she produced a gallant effort in defeat. Held up early, she steadily improved her position and made striking headway three out on the outside of the pack, before her challenge fizzled out between two out and the last when she didn’t look comfortable on the testing ground. She is capable of winning a decent handicap hurdle off her current mark.

Benatar
Gary Moore
3rd, Cheltenham, March 15
This promising novice chaser could step up massively on this gutsy third in the JLT when he returns to a sound surface. He patently wanted to a go a stride quicker in the earlier furlongs and making the frame despite pulling hard for much of the race on sticky ground marks him out as a hot prospect. Connections must be hoping the weather improves before Aintree as Benatar looks tailor-made for the Grade 1 Manifesto Novices' Chase if the ground has 'good' in the description.

David Pipe

Pipe rated this six-year-old chaser as his best chance of a winner at the festival and if this handicap had been run on better ground the French recruit, running in just his second British chase, might have justified stable confidence. He travelled well for much of this race and was going strongly two out but couldn’t find the required extra gear on the run-in. I’m convinced he'll be a lot more effective on a quicker surface and is a big-race winner waiting to happen.
