What Happens Now: looks capable of defying rise in weights after Cheltenham win

Trainer: Ian Williams
2nd, Ludlow, October 26
This five-year-old is rated 96 on the Flat and it’s surely only a matter of time before he takes advantage of his hurdles mark in the 120s. He couldn’t match the finishing speed shown by winner Peruvien Bleu in this 2m handicap to the chagrin of his backers, but he pulled six lengths clear of the third and gave the impression he will be most effective when produced late in a race run at an end-to-end gallop. He is lightly raced over hurdles and open to improvement.

Show’s Over
Tim Vaughan

When this chaser recorded his last success (November 2016) he made the running, and he may have been more effective in this 2m4f handicap had he been ridden more positively. Positioned in midfield, he lost touch with the leaders in the middle of the race and was then playing catch-up. To his credit he knuckled down well to finish third and this was a step in the right direction having finished a distant seventh on his previous start.

What Happens Now
Donald McCain

Won Cheltenham, October 27
The booking of top amateur Derek O’Connor caught the eye in this 3m1f handicap chase and those who took the hint were rewarded. Under a positive ride, What Happens Now produced a dominant display. The handicapper will punish him for this clearcut win but, with form figures of 3111231 since June, he is clearly thriving so may be able to overcome the rise in the weights.
