Bank on his way to Ascot following easy win in Joel Stakes
Andrew Balding's improver thrashed Sir John Lavery
Proschema
Second, 1m maiden, Newmarket, Thursday, September 28
This didn’t look a great race, but the 40-1 runner-up shaped with plenty of promise. This tall chestnut looked fit but was green from the outset. However, he was switched for a clear run with two furlongs to go and finished well, making steady headway up the hill. He’s a good-looking juvenile and will be a lot sharper for the experience.
The expensive winner, Ghaiyyath, didn’t look as if he had improved from his first run two weeks earlier and the trainer had reached for a hood, which surprisingly caused him to be keen to post. He justified strong support in the market to make all and leave his rivals for dead, but he may not have beaten much.
The unfurnished Bombyx did not look great in the paddock and was going in his coat, but he showed a fair amount of ability to come from the back to take third.
The lengthy Mutanaqel, who is a half-brother to a couple of winners, looked fit but was a touch green in the preliminaries. He shaped encouragingly on his first start.
Gododdin, Highcastle, the well-bred Midi, who badly needed the run, Nelson River, who has size, and Pentland Hills, who got very hot beforehand, are others who didn’t come close to fulfulling their potential for one reason or another.
The big disappointment was Tiffin Top, who had finished just behind the winner at Doncaster but was too keen for his own good and was a spent force with a furlong to run.
Global Conqueror
Second, 1m nursery, Newmarket, Thursday
The Simon Crisford-trained colt dominated the paddock proceedings and for three-quarters of the race he looked to have matters under control. However, as he hit the rising ground his stride began to shorten and he was caught near the post. The speed he showed suggests he will have no problems dropping back to 7f.
The compact Paint stepped forward from her last winning performance to run a career-best in third. I like the way she stayed on in determined style on the wide outside.
Blue Laureate looked in decent shape but was never happy on the track.
Maksab and Tadleel looked in good nick given the time of year.
Elarqam
Winner, Tattersalls Stakes, 7f Group 3, Newmarket, Thursday
A competitive field lined up for this Group 3 but the market leader still ran out an emphatic winner. This good-bodied colt looked head and shoulders above his opponents and once the race was under way he travelled powerfully in the centre of the track. I particularly liked the way he stuck his head down and kept on galloping to the line when challenged. He still looked green at various stages and will probably benefit from being put away until next season.
Tip To Win stepped up on his previous run to finish a game second, while Tangled bounced back to his best.
The tall Fajjaj looked in good order, but I think the ground and facing more experienced rivals caught him out on this occasion. His best days are ahead of him.
Albishr and Fortune’s Pearl look decent types for next season.
