Ayr Placepot tips: Graeme Rodway with his perm on Gold Cup day

The competitive nature of the racing at Ayr makes it the ideal track for Saturday’s Placepot.

The opening mile handicap (1.20) is open but I like last year’s winner Revich, who prepped well for this on Thursday. The consistent Redarna also runs the course well and looks solid.

Phantom Flight was impressive when bolting up at York last month in a good time and he looks up to Listed level in the Doonside Cup (1.55). Make the James Horton-trained runner a banker.

The key to landing the Placepot will be surviving the Gold and Silver Cups and the in-form pair Hyperfocus and Emperor Spirit are my two against the field in the Silver version (2.30).

Queen Me is the right favourite for the 6f Firth Of Clyde Fillies' Stakes (3.05) following her second in the Lowther at York. However, there is some strong opposition and Bonny Angel also goes in.

Vadream is my main fancy for the Ayr Gold Cup (3.40) and her class should get her into contention. However, it’s typically competitive and favourite Khanjar is also included.

The mile nursery (4.15) is the last leg and it’s worth playing it safe with favourite Pol Roger.
