The Coral Welsh National is different from almost any other race in the calendar.

Ability is clearly a factor in all races, but the Chepstow ground is nearly always very testing over Christmas, so the key is finding a horse who will be suited by the Welsh National test rather than trying to find one ahead of the handicapper.

The best place to start is with horses who have already run well in the race or have solid course form on heavy ground and, having won the contest twice, Mountainous looks sure to go well again, despite being 10lb higher this time around.
