Towcester delighted with high quality of Derby entries (full list)

TOWCESTER is delighted with the interest in this year’s Star Sports & Orchestrate Derby, despite a slight drop in the number of entries.

A total of 166 entries were in the book when it closed on Monday night, a decrease from last year’s 179 entries. However, head of racing James Chalkley is not deterred by falling 26 short of the desired 192 for 32 six-dog qualifiers and is now looking forward to the action starting.

He said yesterday: “As it always is with Derby entries, it was a busy time but the team at Towcester did a great job organising and collating the entries. We now look forward to Friday’s first-round draw and the action kicking off next week.

“Perhaps there just aren’t that many Derby dogs around, but the event is not lacking in quality from either side of the Irish Sea. Another strong Irish contingent is travelling over and it promises to be another fantastic event.”

Chalkley also revealed that before Friday’s draw there are a number of seedings to be decided, but as things stand the breakdown is 108 railers, 31 middle seeds and 27 wides.

There are a 40 Irish entries and a total of 22 different guards, which will mean greyhounds of the same ownership will be kept apart for the first two rounds of the event.

Irish-based Englishman Graham Holland, who has won two of the last four English Classics and the last two runnings of the Irish Derby, numerically tops the list with 11 entries, including last year’s Irish Derby champion Cheap Sandwiches.

Belgian handler Patrick Janssens, who won the title last year with his Droopys Plunge, has entered seven. Irish handler Liam Dowling fields a total of nine, including one of three co-favourites for the £125,000 prize in the shape of recent Kirby Memorial runner-up Ballymac Setanta.

Sponsors Star Sports were quick out of the traps to price all 166 entries yesterday and are keen to get those at the top of the market in the book early on.

Head of trading Dave Jolly said yesterday: “We’re expecting plenty of business now that the entries have been confirmed and the prices are up.

“In recent weeks we have laid plenty for Graham Holland’s Low Profile and Pat Buckley’s Hackney Corner – the Irish team look strong again this year.

“As ever, we’ll be on course throughout the Derby at Towcester and happy to accommodate anyone wanting a bet on the outright market or in the heats.

“We are looking to lay those at the head of the market. We are currently 14-1 the field and those at the top deserve to be there – but we want them in the book!”
