Superstayer Droopys Rated has run last race

THE brilliant but brief career of Droopys Rated is over after Paul Young’s star broke a hock in the Select Stayers.

The dog, sent off 1-6 for the race, eased at the second bend and then back-pedalled throughout before finally checking badly at the sixth.

“It looked like he went on the second bend but he carried on, it’s the adrenaline when they’re racing,” said Young yesterday.

“I didn’t really want to drop him in trip from marathons but there aren’t any so what are you going to do, just leave him on his bed? He did a blinding trial last week, just off the clock, so it wasn’t the wrong call but obviously it was a disaster.

“We got home at one o’clock, he ate up all his food and was with Stefano [Malegori, vet] at seven this morning. He had to have a couple of screws put in to mend the hock, so that’s him retired now.

“He was great to win the TV Trophy and the Dorando, and smash the clock at Central Park, but it was rock bottom after the race. Then Gold goes and does what he did . . .”

Radical Story swooped late to take the £2,500 first prize for Craig Morris, edging Frankton Ivy by three-quarters of a length in 44.35sec.

Clonbrien Piper, the long-time leader, faded into fourth behind the runner-up and Ballintubber Star.
