AS the Racing Post celebrates it s 40th birthday, photographer Steve Nash, who has been on board since the first edition on April 15, 1986, has shared some of his favourite moments behind the lens.

Nash said: “Having covered four decades of greyhound racing there has been plenty of special moments and we started with a real high as the mighty Ballyregan Bob broke the world record for consecutive wins in our first year. The podium shot, with trainer George Curtis celebrating and including our first editor Mike Palmer, is one I’ll always treasure.

“Going through the decades, my only ever front page pic in the main paper is framed on my office wall. Remember the Board and Parliament’s campaign against the evening opening of betting shops? Our shot beat off any opposition from the horses for the front cover in December 1992.

“Capturing the famous triple dead-heat at Romford in January 2011 will live long in my mind, while the iconic Westmead Hawk Derby cover, produced by Racing Post graphics editor Dave Cramphorn in 2006, is a personal favourite.

“With the loss of trainer Nick Savva and owner Bob Morton in recent weeks it has become even more poignant and was a brilliant piece of work.

“I’m proud to have been there from the start and to have shared so many pictures with our readers.”
