Janssens hails his prolific star Tomcat

ROMEO TOMCAT was yesterday labelled “a beast of a dog” by his trainer Patrick Janssens after another imperious display in his Coral Gold Collar semi-final on Sunday at Hove.
Registering a remarkable tenth win on the spin, the British-bred superstar (pictured) has already marched unbeaten through the Yorkshire Derby at Doncaster and PGR Kent Derby at Central Park in his winning sequence, and will line up as the odds-on favourite in Sunday’s £10,000 decider on the south coast.
Janssens said: “This dog has really come of age. With experience he has just improved and improved. When he started out he was a bit backward and his legs were like jelly as he was learning how to run and race, but now he’s a beast of a dog!
“I fancy him for next year’s Derby, if it is to be held at Towcester – which it should be in my opinion. Right now he is flying.
“He’s so game and determined, he rode a bump at the bend on Sunday in his semi-final and then still went on and won the race easily.”
Janssens will be doubly represented in the Category One final on Sunday afternoon with Derby semi-finalist Slick Sentinel another winner over the 500m trip last weekend.
His trainer added: “They can drop ten Slick Sentinels off at the kennel tomorrow and I’d be delighted. The only competition final he hasn’t reached was the Derby itself.
“He is another game and determined type. So many dogs drop on to the rail at Hove due to the camber on the bends, but he keeps out wide and that worked in his favour on Sunday.
“It’s a good final and I’m happy with how the draw has worked out with our two.”
Janssens also welcomed the re-opening of his local track Suffolk Downs this evening, where he is well represented.
“I’ve entered dogs elsewhere and races haven’t filled, so a track on our doorstep will always be welcomed and we’ve entered a few for Tuesday night,” he said.
“It’s a great track to start pups off at and teach young dogs how to race, it’s all bends and dogs can learn how to pass and navigate through a race.”
