Top-class stallions prove the big draw

Plenty of people in attendance

Studs across Ireland opened their gates for the third edition of the Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Stallion Trail this week with a number of leading stallions on show.

Hosts of breeders and enthusiasts flocked to see the likes of Coolmore stalwart Galileo, the Aga Khan’s Sea The Stars and his Derby-winning son Harzand, Irish National Stud flagbearer Invincible Spirit and Darley’s Exceed And Excel.

There have been a number of eye-catching recruits to the Irish stallion ranks for 2017 and the likes of Irish 2,000 Guineas hero Awtaad, Prix du Jockey Club winner New Bay, and dual Group 1 scorer Fascinating Rock were also on show over the two-day event.

ITM marketing manager Sarah Gavin said: “It’s been busier than the previous two years and every stud I’ve been to there’s been so many people there and a great atmosphere everywhere.

“I think we underestimate how much it means to racegoers to go and see the stallions after following them in their racing career. There are so many new stallions in Ireland this year and maybe that extra buzz is why more people have attended it.

“A lot of people will have gone to the ITBA awards on Saturday night and then on to Leopardstown on Sunday, it’s a fantastic card, and it’s just a great week in the calendar to have the stallion trail on.”
