Thetis and Smoulder set new February Sale record
Pair sell for 550,000gns in Newmarket on Thursday
Not once but twice the record for the Tattersalls February Sale, which was set last year when Easton Angel sold for 500,000gns, was broken on Thursday when both Thetis and Smoulder sold for 550,000gns.
Listed-placed Thetis brought the curtain down on the Ballymacoll Stud dispersal when she and her Lope De Vega filly sold to John McCormack Bloodstock for the record-breaking sum.
Just one lot later the record was matched when Smoulder, one of seven lots part-owned by South African businessman Markus Jooste, was bought by Lordship Stud.
The four-year-old daughter of Redoute's Choice is a three-parts sister to Classic heroine Legatissimo and was joined in the draft by Key To My Heart, who sold to BBA Ireland for 525,000gns.
Tom Harris of Lordship Stud said: "We loved her as a yearling and wanted to buy her then, so it's come full circle and we're delighted.
"We've been trying to buy a mare all winter but it's been tough. For us, she was the standout here today.
"We have some ideas for covering stallions, but no set plans yet."
