Late session millionaire

Amo Racing continued its relentless mission to buy some of the best-bred lots at Park Paddocks and Newsells Park Stud's Wootton Bassett colt (lot 349) was the third 2.2 million guineas lot of the session.

The yearling is out of the Group-winning and Classic-placed Scat Daddy mare Qabala, already the dam of two winners, and it is a family which also includes American Grade 1 scorer Flute.

"For the first three or four months of the Flat season people were looking at me saying St Mark’s isn’t going to do it. Now he looks like he’s going to be an exceptional stallion."

James Thomas caught up with Fearghal Hogan of Apollo Bloodstock and David Weston of Flintstone Stud about their life-changing pinhooks.

Sires with their first runners in 2026

Baaeed surveys the scene from his box at Beech House Stud
Baaeed: Shadwell giant has his first runners in 2026

Talking of first-crop yearling sires - which stallions with their first two-year-olds are you looking forward to in 2026?

It's an obvious one for me, I'm afraid, but I've long had a soft spot for Baaeed. He was brilliant on the track, is in possession of a fantastic pedigree and has a temperament to die for. The yearlings I've seen of his so far appear to have inherited that attitude - fingers crossed for the son of Sea The Stars.

State Of Rest flying

The sole progeny selling today by Rathbarry Stud sire State Of Rest made 300,000gns to Hurworth Bloodstock earlier this session.

Mountarmstrong Stud's filly (lot 253) is a half-sister to Group 2 winner Sky Majesty and from the family of Molecomb Stakes scorer Majestic Missile, so it is a highly capable family, but I feel State Of Rest has plenty going for him as well.

The multiple Group/Grade 1-winning globetrotter has impressed with his first yearlings, one of them topping Goffs Orby Book 2 last week at €150,000. James Thomas was on hand to report from Kildare Paddocks.

Current clubhouse leaders

At this state of play I thought I would take a look at the leading buyer, consignor and sire...

Godolphin has maintained top spot with 14 lots bought for a total of 13.9 million guineas, including the 2.2 million guineas Frankel colt bought today

Newsells Park Stud has also retained its lead as consignor, with seven lots sold for 6.4 million guineas.

Frankel has now taken over as leading sire by average (1.04 million guineas) and total (9.3 million guineas) for nine lots sold.

"The sire is obviously very, very good and I hope the filly is very good; she runs in the Group 1 on Friday. He came out of the field in February and looked like this."

Burke strikes for Ghaiyyath's half-brother

Ghaiyyath: sire of the Osarus Yearling Sale top lot
Ghaiyyath: world champion and exciting young sire

A big buy for Karl Burke!

The Wootton Bassett colt goes for 800,000 guineas in the end to the North Yorkshire trainer, who has enjoyed another superb season.

By the much-missed Coolmore titan who has continued to make waves, the colt is a half-brother to world champion racehorse and exciting young Darley sire Ghaiyyath.

The pair's Galileo dam Nightime was a six-length winner of the Irish 1,000 Guineas in 2006 for Dermot Weld and she has excelled at stud too.

Besides Ghaiyyath, she has also produced American Grade 1 scorer and black-type producer Zhukova and the Group-placed Knight To King.

Close to another million-guinea lot

We were close to a sixth million-guinea sale of the day as bidding steadily increased on a No Nay Never filly out of Nictate, who is dam to the classy Maljoom among others.

The hammer eventually falls at 950,000gns to agent Jamie McCalmont, who is also racing manager for several owners including Marc Chan.

Lot 304, a Wootton Bassett colt by Nightime, is going through the ring now and could bring some mega bucks . . .

Eustace gets involved

Newmarket trainer Harry Eustace has had some year, headlined by a Group 1 Royal Ascot double with Docklands and Time For Sandals.

Those two cost a mere £50,000 combined, but he has been using some the prize-money the pair have accumulated to get in among the action at Book 1, spending 180,000 guineas on a Too Darn Hot colt offered by Kilminfoyle House Stud in Ireland.

Sierra Leone news

A quick break from all the Amo-Godolphin at Tattersalls Book 1 - Coolmore America has announced that Breeders' Cup Classic hero Sierra Leone will stand at Ashford Stud after his final start at Del Mar next month.

Ashford’s Dermot Ryan said: "We’re incredibly excited to welcome Sierra Leone to Ashford for the coming season. When you hear someone like Chad Brown say that he is the best he has ever trained, it doesn’t get any better than that."

'This colt was an exceptional horse'

Simon Marsh

Watership Down Stud's No Nay Never colt out of Cheveley Park winner Millisle was one of the highlights of a frenetic session so far, selling to MV Magnier and White Birch Farm for 1.7 million guineas.

Of the striking colt, Simon Marsh, general manager of Watership Down, said: "To get all the stars to align is very difficult, but he this is a lovely horse, and he was on a lot of lists. It's a wonderful price, but now we need him to be a good racehorse."

"I felt that MiIlisle being a Cheveley Park winner, we needed to keep the speed. He has had an exceptional year, and this colt was an exceptional horse. She has got a Siyouni colt foal, and we would love to get a filly out of the mare now."

Amo again!

Kia Joorabchian
Kia Joorabchian: went to 1.7 million guineas for Lynn Lodge Stud's Night Of Thunder coltCredit: Laura Green

Guess who's back? Yep, that's right.

Kia Joorabchian has unfinished business and went to 1.7 million guineas to secure Lynn Lodge Stud's Night Of Thunder colt (lot 275).

The chestnut is a handsome model and it certainly helps that his sire can do no wrong at the moment. Kildangan Stud resident Night Of Thunder is responsible for the likes of Ombudsman, Desert Flower and Choisya among others this year.

A fee rise for 2026 - from €150,000 this year - looks pretty much assured from this author's viewpoint.

Racing Post Newmarket correspondent David Milnes was out and about on the gallops here this morning and several John and Thady Gosden stars were preparing for Champions Day runs.

Among them was Irish 2,000 Guineas and St James's Palace Stakes winner Field Of Gold, who is bound for the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, while Juddmonte International hero Ombudsman is set to line up in the Champion Stakes.

Coolmore land 1.7 million guineas No Nay Never colt

Coolmore has stepped it up a notch today and MV Magnier signed for the No Nay Never colt out of Cheveley Park Stakes heroine Millisle (lot 266) at 1.7 million guineas.

Consigned by Watership Down Stud, the yearling is a half-brother to another seven-figure Book 1 graduate in Alfareqa. The daughter of Frankel sold to Shadwell for 1.6 million guineas in 2023 and has since won for Owen Burrows.

That means Millisle has generated total Tattersalls Book 1 receipts of 3.3 million guineas and at just eight-years-old.

Sheikh Mohammed

Sheikh Mohammed is in attendance once again at Park Paddocks and seems pretty keen to add to his juvenile squad for 2026.

Godolphin signed for another well-bred individual in Ballylinch Stud's Frankel half-brother to Breeders' Cup winner Aunt Pearl (lot 259) at 900,000gns.

The colt hails from a top-class family which includes dual French Classic hero Brametot, as well as the brilliant Monsun and German Oaks heroine Muskoka.

'The plan was always to use Wootton Bassett'

Wootton Bassett's Group 1 double at Longchamp on Sunday was a poignant reminder of the Coolmore great's powers and that form continued in the sales ring for the late stallion.

Amo Racing went to the current joint session-topping price of 2.2 million guineas for Marlhill House Stud's half-brother to Group 2 winner Crypto Force (lot 247).

Marlhill House Stud's manager Brian McConnon said of the result: "We bought the mare here three years ago and the plan was always to use Wootton Bassett and this is the first by the sire we have had out of the mare

"She's by Galileo and we're always fond of that, Crypto Force had won the Beresford and so she was a young mare who could produce - she had a good young profile and would suit the stallion. She has a filly by the sire at foot and is not in-foal."

'One of the most important horses we have retired for a good while'

MV Magnier went to 1.3 million guineas for the Dubawi colt out of the hugely popular Nassau Stakes winner Lady Bowthorpe and he had news of another son of Dubawi too.

Delacroix has been a top-class performer for Coolmore and Ballydoyle this year, with Group 1 victories in the Eclipse and Irish Champion Stakes. Sales editor James Thomas confirmed with Magnier that the three-year-old is Champions Day-bound.

For the future, Delacroix is a vital outcross for Coolmore's broodmare band which has plenty of Sadler's Wells/Galileo-line mares.

Magnier said: "He's a lovely horse, Lady Bowthorpe was a very good race mare, it is a great result for Emma Banks who is a very nice lady, so well done to her.

"Dubawi is still going very well. Thankfully we’re going to retire Delacroix at the end of this year – he is a complete outcross for us, and he is probably one of the most important horses we have retired for a good while. If this lad is any good, he will be the same."

Amo Racing claimed the joint top lot of the session when going to 2.2 million guineas for Marlhill House Stud's Wootton Bassett half-brother to Group 2 scorer Crypto Force (lot 247).

The colt is from a family Amo knows well as Crypto Force, a son of Time Test, won the Beresford Stakes at two and was third in the Tattersalls Gold Cup last year sporting the purple silks.

Magnier strikes for Blackbeard half-brother to Arizona Blaze

MV Magnier and White Birch Farm were in action again and secured Glenvale Stud's Blackbeard half-brother to Group 1-winning sprinter Arizona Blaze (lot 230) for 500,000gns.

The colt is by Coolmore's champion two-year-old and first-crop yearling sire, while his distaff page has been boosted time and again this term by his high-class half-sibling.

Amo Racing's Arizona Blaze has been a tough and talented performer both at two last year and this term, securing his career highlight in the Flying Five Stakes at the Curragh last month. He also captured the Sapphire Stakes at that track and was a neck second in the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot.
